Promotion of the Project 101085133 – EUGREEN
On April 26, 2023, the All-Ukrainian Forum “Education for Sustainable Development” was held, organized by the National Ecological and Naturalistic Center for Student Youth of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in cooperation with the Ukrainian Society for Nature Conservation and the All-Ukrainian Ecological League.
As part of the promotion of the Jean Monnet Module Project “European Practices on Green Transformation: Lessons for Ukraine”,
Dr. Tetiana Yakovyshyna, Doctor of Technical Sciences, prepared a presentation and conference paper entitled “Implementation of the European Green Deal in the Educational Process for Training Students at Technical Universities.”
The report highlighted the successful outcomes of cooperation between the Department of International Economics and Public Administration and the Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection within the framework of the project.
The European Green Deal policy for sustainable development requires the training of professionals capable of addressing applied challenges within technogenically stressed urban ecosystems to promote economic greening, make Europe a climate-neutral continent, improve citizens’ well-being, and protect biodiversity.
The educational component of the project contributes to the formation of students’ knowledge of climate change, adaptation to its negative consequences, and understanding of these processes from scientific, social, and policy perspectives, considering the specific features of industrial regions and their natural resource bases. The goal is to ensure the sustainable development of urbanized territories in line with their production profiles.
During the study of this module, based on the EU’s green practices, students acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in:
– assessing the impact of climate change on the natural and technogenic components of urban ecosystems in industrial regions;
– developing multi-purpose environmental protection measures to mitigate climate change effects and ensure environmental safety in urban areas;
– designing mechanisms of adaptation and self-recovery of urban ecosystems in line with the global Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the European Green Deal’s climate objectives.
The acquired knowledge will contribute to the training of modern specialists in technical universities who are able to identify and analyze key problems of economic development at the enterprise level, apply the principles of the green economy, justify practical mechanisms for solving environmental challenges, and implement comprehensive measures for green development at the enterprise, community, and national levels.
Among the speakers were:
– Prof. Volodymyr Verbytskyi, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Director of the National Ecological and Naturalistic Center for Student Youth, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine;
– Prof. Volodymyr Shevchuk, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Chair of the Presidium of the Ukrainian Society for Nature Conservation;
– Dr. Volodymyr Sheremet, Head of the Bureau on Environmental Issues of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church;
– Iryna Bilyk, expert of the Swedish-Ukrainian project “Support to Decentralization in Ukraine” (SALAR International).
The forum addressed key issues such as the development of environmental education in Ukraine, the creation of a continuous environmental learning trajectory, the integration of environmental disciplines into educational programs, raising the level of ecological awareness, and promoting an active civic position toward the European Green Deal policy.
